Welcome to the website of the 420 class in Scotland

Small, but perfectly formed!
The 420 class in Scotland has trebled in size this year - and in terms of growth is only rivalled by the Optimists. There are now enough boats that a local Traveller Series is feasible... Four races are planned for 2010, commencing at North Berwick in the ELYC Annual Regatta.
Start race 1 - 10s after the gun

470 Europeans Press Photo Call - Largs

There was a press photo call on Sunday 30th April at Largs to announce the run-up to the 470 Europeaa Championships, which is being hosted there. Scottish 470 Olympian Luke Patience was there to refresh his memory on the venue - and to add a bit of on-the-water action for the press we took a couple of 420s along. Those of you more used to the wet and grey English Channel image of Scotland might be surprised by the bright sunshine, 15-18kts of breeze, blue sky and sea. A perfect day for a blast - and that is just what Callum/Drew, Luke/David enjoyed. The press came off the water happy and impressed. The day was organised by SSI, RYA Scotland and the Scottish National Center, Cumbrae.

470 Europeans Buildup
In case you hadn't realised, the 470 Europeans are being held in Largs this year. Whilst our top 420 sailors will be in Flanders competing at Nieuwpoort Week, the top international 470 fleet will be enjoying the sun, wind and ice cream of Largs.

There was a press call today as part of the media build-up, with Scotland's newest Olympian, Luke Patience, refreshing his memory on the location. Since a 470 was not available, a pair of our 420s (thanks Jenny, Callum) appeared on the scene for the on-water photo opportunity. Blue sky, 17-20kts of NE breeze, and a pack of photographers: what more could be required? Well - somebody to sail the boats. Luke Patience, David Kohler, Calum Airlie, Drew Airlie took up the gauntlet- and went out to perform for the press. Most of them were not familiar with sailing -  but we/they were fortunate to have Tony Gorkowski and Marc Turner on hand. Cumbrae provided their work boat in the capable hands of David Frame as a photo platform. Feedback afterwards was all positive, 'it was amazing - Marc was talking a different language and the sailors put the boats just where we needed them to get good shots'.

Callum's comment afterwards: 'It was awesome. I now realise how much more we have to learn!'
